My high school experience was interesting, or at least that is what I like to say because most of what I did at night was sit and watch TV or read on the computer rather than go out and party or do other ‘cool’ stuff. Though it was kind of a boring way to spend high school I liked it, I had my best friend Jackie, I had the good grades I wanted and I knew I was going to be able to go to any college that I wanted.
In my experience there were two teachers that left lasting impressions on me, and they both happened in the last two years of high school. The first was my math teacher for Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus, Mr. Shaw, so he was my teacher for two straight years, junior and senior year. First and foremost Shaw was a great teacher always stopping and helping you if you needed it, always offering to take time out of his life to help you after school and always reminding you that some things in life are going to be hard, so you just have to work at it more. Shaw was also very sarcastic and funny, he would say things that had you laughing so hard even though you were supposed to be quietly working. It was a great environment for a math class because while he was messing with you, he was also making fun of himself. He makes me want to be a teacher like that, someone that can truly teach and teach well, having kids want to have you as a teacher over and over again. He also makes me want to be a fun teacher, one that can allow a little goofing off as long as it really doesn’t hurt someone’s feelings or anything.
The second teacher was my Advanced Placement European History teacher, Mr. Rome, and yes that was his real name. The way he taught class was so different that most people do since we sat in a ‘U’ shape with the desks facing each other so if we were discussing something we could all see one another. Rome also encouraged that if you knew something different or new or just something that most others didn’t, to tell the class so everyone, even him will learn something new or see a new perspective in an assignment. He wanted us to learn not only from him but also from each other and hear everyone’s unique ideas, which pretty much meant that anything could happen during class and that was the best part about it.
These two teachers really influenced me because they remind me that as a teacher you have to enjoy what you teach and enjoy the students around you. They also taught me that you should listen to you your students because they can teach you something new any day of class.
